  • Attendees:

    Alana C., Alex W., Anna F., Chloe W., Colbie C., Dennis W., Elli T., Helen B., Ian M., Isaac H., Logan T., Rebecca B.

  • Secretary:

    Elli T.

  • Minutes:

We had a discussion about the debate topic we picked last week, whether gay and Lesbian marriage should be allowed.

    • Cons:
      • HIV/AIDS is common in the homosexual community.
      • A lot of married parents still want to adopt kids.
      • There would be backlash if gay marriage were allowed nationwide.
      • If you define marriage as something religious, gay marriage becomes a completely different matter based upon the individual.
      • Gay marriage puts the couple themselves in some danger.
      • A lot of people don't like the idea of gay marriage, so they might hurt or kill homosexual people.
      • You're going to have backlash on anything that's huge and affects the whole country.
      • What would the children call their homosexual parents?
      • With a mom and a dad, you usually have two views - a female view and a male view. Children need influences from different points of view to grow up.
      • What's wrong with kids that only have one parent?
    • Pros:
      • These gay/Lesbian couples probably won't have kids; instead, they will adopt.
      • The rate of divorce for homosexual couples is lower than the rate for heterosexual couples.
      • There is nothing legally in the US specifically against homosexual relations. Why should there be something against homosexual marriage?
      • Being gay is sometimes caused by a genetic mutation in the brain.
      • Every church and religion doesn't disagree to gay marriage.
      • Don't you get influences from things other than home like school or extracurricular activities?

Writing a speech about this debate topic over Spring Break is optional.
