Meeting 2: Friday, November 14, 2008

Minutes:
A couple of basic rules were established.
1. Raise your hand before speaking.
2. Don't interrupt unless necessary.
3. Criticize ideas, not people.
4. Don't bribe officers.
5. No foul language.
6. No hitting, spitting, harmful contact, etc.
Consequences:
1. Red card or Green card
2. Winner may pick new topic?
A treasurer was elected: Dennis.

The topic box will be used for speeches and ideas for the first few weeks.

Debate #1:

This debate was about if global warming is caused by humans or not.
- Supporters for Yes: Abe, Anna, Chloe, Gabriel, Helen, Isaac, Lindsey, Rebecca
- Yes Evidence:
  - Lindsey: "Have you seen what crap we put into the air when we drive semi-trucks?"
  - Rebecca: "The world doesn't evolve that fast."
- Supporters for No: Colbie, Ian, Logan
- No Evidence:
  - Colbie: "How could humans have caused global warming?"
  - Ian: "What is so bad about global warming?"
- Judges: Alana, Dennis, Elli, Jacob
- Winner: The judges decided that the Yes side won this debate because they gave facts and supported them with evidence and opinions, while the No side simply stated opinions without a lot of supporting facts.
Announcement: The Spanish Springs Lion Club is meeting the first and third Wednesday at David's Grill, 6590 N. Wingfield Parkway, at 6:00 p.m. This year's subject is, "How can we solve the oil crisis?" All high-school students interested, please email Logan at lthomason@davidsonacademy.unr.edu.This competition is only for high school students.
