Meeting 9: Tuesday, February 3, 2009

  • Attendees:

    Abe R., Alana C., Alex W., Anna F., Ashley V., Austin S., Chloe W., Colbie C., Dennis W., Elli T., Helen B., Ian M., Isaac H., Jacob L., Lindsey S., Logan T., Rebecca B., Tyler H.

  • Secretary:

    Elli T.

  • Minutes:

We took a vote on what we wanted to do today (we decided on a discussion on whether or not middle or high school rules should be considered at the DA).

Should driving-age DA students be allowed to go off-campus during lunch?

    • If a student were to get hurt off campus, the parents would sue the DA and not the place where the student went.

Why is there a difference between ordinary middle/high school PE programs and the DA's PE program (up at UNR)?

    • Many schools are centered on sports (i.e. McQueen Football).
    • A lot of people assume that high school students are more responsible than middle school students are, so they can be responsible for higher-level sports.
    • Some middle-schoolers are more likely to get hurt than high schoolers are. (They are in the middle of puberty and large growth spurts.)
    • High schoolers can be more competitive than middle-schoolers.
    • To have a good sports team, you need to have a lot of people that are dedicated to that sport and have the same goal.
    • There are enough students at the DA to put together a co-ed sports team. This would help cooperation between the students.
    • The DA is a public school, so we are eligible to play against other public schools. But should we be eligible to play local middle school teams or high school teams?
    • If the DA had a sports team, where would we play?
    • Once the team is created, who would be willing to join? Some of the older students may be too busy with homework.
    • What will happen if the kids that want to join the team consist of mostly middle schoolers? Will the high schoolers be denied admission to the team?
    • Home-schoolers are allowed to join public school sports teams, so if we were to form a team, home-schoolers could possibly play for us.
    • We would need to find out what sports the students at the DA are interested in before we form any team to see if there are enough members.
    • A lot of people become injured from playing football (concussions, broken bones, etc.)
    • When the current PE class plays football, it's an "epic fail".
    • High school football leagues are usually more 'violent' than middle school teams.
    • When playing a game, the two teams have to follow the same set of rules or else the game isn't fair.
